Thinking Ink Press is happy to announce that we just published our first instant book—Jagged Fragments: Two Stories by award-winning science fiction and fantasy author Anthony Francis. Instant books are limited edition miniature books with complete stories inside. Folded from a single sheet of paper, they fit in the palm of your hand, but they’re sturdy enough to read and share.

Keiko O’Leary, our instant book designer, created the book layout, selected the paper, and hand-folded each book. Jagged Fragments features cover art by Sandy Billingsley.

To get a copy of Jagged Fragments, look for Anthony Francis at Clockwork Alchemy this weekend. For information about instant books and future opportunities to get them, you can sign up here: https://www.thinkinginkpress.com/jf/

Successful Outcome for The Parents’ Guide to Perthes Preordering and Crowdfunding Event!

We’re very happy with the results of the preordering and crowdfunding event for The Parents’ Guide to Perthes. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Not only did people order books for themselves, but contributors also covered the cost for us to donate over 20 books. We’ll be working with nonprofit organizations and hospitals where Perthes is treated so that the donated books will find their way into good hands.

We are currently getting The Parents’ Guide to Perthes ready for publication in paperback and e-book editions and expect to have books available in February 2015. We’ll follow up with contributors as soon as we have books. When The Parents’ Guide to Perthes is published, it will go into world-wide distribution through online booksellers and brick and mortar bookstores.

The ebook is now available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, iTunes, and many other online bookstores. (ETA May 18: the paperback is available now, too!)

You can also purchase from us directly:

ETA May 18: Since you can now buy the paperback through most booksellers, we’re no longer accepting preorders through our website.

New Resource for Families Coping with a Rare Disease

Thinking Ink Press is excited to announce that we will be publishing The Parents’ Guide to Perthes, the first book about Perthes disease for families. Perthes is a rare childhood disease that affects the hip joints of children age two to twelve years old and can limit the child’s mobility.

The Parents' Guide to Perthes

Written by Dr. Charles T. Price and Betsy Miller, The Parents’ Guide to Perthes provides accurate information and practical advice for families. Charles T. Price, MD is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He has done research on Perthes and has shared his findings in research papers and medical books. Betsy Miller is the author of The Parents’ Guide to Hip Dysplasia and The Parents’ Guide to Clubfoot (available through booksellers).

People affected by rare diseases need resources as much as anyone else. But publishing books about rare diseases is challenging because the number of potential readers is small. The cost of publishing the book is more than the amount of income that book sales can generate. Thinking Ink Press is looking for ways to make it possible to publish The Parents’ Guide to Perthes and other similar books. To that end we’re running a pre-ordering and crowdfunding event on Pubslush from October 17, 2014 through November 16, 2014.

Please visit the project page on Pubslush, at http://perthes.pubslush.com, to learn more about the project and to download an excerpt.

Note that Pubslush only accepts US dollars or UK pounds.  To pre-order or contribute to this project in any other currency, please use this web form instead: https://www.thinkinginkpress.com/perthes/

Comic-Con Meets the 24 Hour Comic Day Survival Guide

The 24 Hour Comic Day Survival Guide 2014 San Diego Comic-Con Preview Version cover
The 24 Hour Comic Day Survival Guide 2014 San Diego Comic-Con Preview Version
San Diego Comic-Con 2014 is coming up fast, and Thinking Ink Press is happy to announce that one of our founders, Nathan Vargas, co-author of the 24 Hour Comic Day Survival Guide, will appear with Nate Gertler, Chris Brady, Jimmy Purcell, and Marco Devanzo on a panel celebrating the 10th anniversary of 24-Hour Comics Day on Friday, July 25 at 5:15 pm in Room 18.

Look for Nathan and his co-author Anthony Francis, also of Thinking Ink Press, at Comic-Con. You might even get a sneak peek preview edition of their forthcoming book, the 24 Hour Comic Day Survival Guide. We can neither confirm nor deny the rumor that Thinking Ink Press will be publishing a future edition of this book, or that you might find Nathan and Anthony at the Alternative Press Expo in October if you don’t make it to Comic-Con.

What is 24 Hour Comic Day?
It’s one crazy day to create an entirely new comic book — a 24 page comic, in 24 consecutive hours. Started by Scott McCloud in 1990 and turned into an annual event by Nat Gertler in 2004, 24HCD is now an institution, with artists participating in their own studios and in venues all around the world. This year is the tenth anniversary of 24HCD, and the event itself will be held October 4th.

Why a survival guide?
It’s a fun way to get the help you need to succeed at 24HCD! It’s filled with tips about how to get started, how to keep going, how to keep from getting stuck, how to get unstuck, and how to get to the finish line. Or you can use it just to help brainstorm creating comics! The guide is based on Nathan and Anthony’s experiences participating in 24 Hour Comics Day and hosting Blitz Comics Learning Labs.

When is that panel again?
